Diseases of cultured prawns in Australia ArchiMer

Plebejus baculovirus and other MBV-related viruses have been found in Penaeus plebejus, P. monodon and P. merguiensis . They appear highly pathogenic in certain situations currently undefined. We have found Hepatopancreatic Parvo-like Virus (< hpv) in wild P. esculentus and P. merguiensis but not yet in cultured prawns. The amphophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies we find in P. esculentus do not appear to have a viral cause.

Epizootic diseases of oysters associated with viral infections ArchiMer

Virus infections have been associated with major diseases of oysters of the genus Crassostrea. These infections include gill necrosis virus and hemocytic infection virus diseases of the Portuguese oyster C. angulata and more recently the oyster velar virus disease affecting larval, hatchery-reared Pacific oysters C. gigas. This report presents histo- and cytopathological characteristics of these infections in which large icosahedral cytoplasmic deoxyriboviruses, similar to the iridoviridae, are implicated, The gill necrosis virus causes, principally in the Portuguese oyster, an evolutive ulceration of the gills, including cellular hypertrophy and severe inflammation. First report of White spot syndrome virus in farmed and wild penaeid shrimp from Lagoa dos Patos estuary, southern Brazil BJM

In this study, we detected White spot syndrome virus (WSSV) in wild Farfantepenaeus paulensis collected in the Lagoa dos Patos estuary and cultivated Litopenaeus vannamei. This is the first report of WSSV in F. paulensis from Lagoa dos Patos and farmed L. vannamei shrimps in Rio Grande do Sul.

La papilomatosis es una entidad tumoral generalmente benigna que ataca la piel y mucosas de diferentes zonas del cuerpo. Esta enfermedad puede limitar la reproducción en los cetáceos y una de sus causas puede ser la infección por papilomavirus. La observación de pequeñas verrugas en la piel o mucosas de estos animales hace inferir la presencia de lesiones papilomatosas.

Ultrastructural study of the testicular germinative zone in the crab R. harrisii has led to observation of virus-like particles exclusively located in the nuclei of mesodermal cells encompassing primary spermatogonia. These particles are related to the group of viruses of the herpes type.

Particules virales de type Bacilovirus observees chez le crabe Carcinus maenas. ArchiMer

A new virus from the Crab Carcinus maenas has been found in the nuclei of conjunctive and blood cells. Its localization, morphology, size, morphogeny relate it to the Baculovirus group. By some aspects it appears to be related closer to the insect viruses from Oryctes rhinoceros, and to red mite viruses from Panonychus ulmi and P.citri than to the nuclear polyhedrosis of the pink shrimp Penaeus duorarum.

ABSTRACT: This study evaluated the reproductive performance of Nellore heifers without previous vaccination undergoing fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) and subsequent natural breeding under different vaccination protocols against infectious bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1), bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), and bovine leptospirosis (BL). A total of 763 animals were included; the group assignment was as follows: T1, control without vaccination; T2, vaccination against BL; T3, vaccination against BHV-1and BVDV; T4,vaccination against combination of BL + BHV-1and BVDV. Status and future of molluscan pathology in North America ArchiMer

Serious diseases have plagued the North American oyster industry for at least 75 years. These include Malpeque Bay disease, M.S.X. disease, perkinsiosis, nocardiosis, oyster velar virus disease and others. Some of these diseases have proven intractable since they are caused by infectious agents which have not yet been transmitted in the laboratory or which cannot yet be cultivated outside of the host animal. The increased importance of aquaculture of these species and the advent of modern molecular technologies in biology have provided both the impetus and the means to now advance the science of molluscan pathology.

Use of rotavirus virus-like particles as surrogates to evaluate virus persistence in shellfish ArchiMer

Rotavirus virus-like particles (VLPs) and MS2 bacteriophages were bioaccumulated in bivalve mollusks to evaluate viral persistence in shellfish during depuration and relaying under natural conditions. Using this nonpathogenic surrogate virus, we were able to demonstrate that about 1 log(10) of VLPs was depurated after 1 week in warm seawater (22 degrees C). Phage MS2 was depurated more rapidly (about 2 log(10) in 1 week) than were VLPs, as determined using a single-compartment model and linear regression analysis. After being relayed in the estuary under the influence of the tides, VLPs were detected in oysters for up to 82 days following seeding with high levels of VLPs (concentration range between 10(10) and 10(9) particles per g of pancreatic tissue)...

Vectors of Chikungunya Virus in Senegal : Transmission cycles OceanDocs

Chikungunya fever is a viral disease transmitted to human beings by Aedes genus mosquitoes. From 1972 to 1986 in Ke´dougou, Senegal, 178 Chikungunya virus strains were isolated from gallery forest mosquitoes, with most of them isolated from Ae. furcifer-taylori (129 strains), Ae. luteocephalus (27 strains), and Ae. dalzieli (12 strains). The characteristics of the sylvatic transmission cycle are a circulation periodicity with silent intervals that last approximately three years. Viral contamination and depuration of oysters under field conditions ArchiMer

Shellfish consumption is clearly associated with the transmission of enteric viruses. The channel of transmission of enteric viruses to human beings could be decreased particularly if the systems of depuration of shellfish were optimized, standardized and if their viral efficiency was controlled. The purpose of this work was to study the contamination of oysters and to assess the efficiency of several depuration processes. Our study have demonstrated that in some cases, 50% of oysters samples contain enteric viruses or H.A.V. antigen and the quantities of viruses range from 17 to 246 FF for the rotaviruses and from 124 to 200 for the enteroviruses per 100 g of tissue. Viral depuration of Mytilus galloprovincialis in ozone treated water ArchiMer

The depuration effectiveness of Poliovirus 1 and HAV contamined mussels, when subjected to flowing ozonized water, was evaluated. Mussels were experimentally contamined and then depurated up to 72 hours using a pilot depuration system with ozone treated and untreated water. The results showed that viral infectivity titter decreased more rapidly in mussels subjected to ozonized water (from 10 super(4) TCID50 to 10 super(1.5) TCID50 per ml of Poliovirus 1 but in the following period it remained unchanged. Also HAV was detected in the mussels after 72 h of depuration.
